Our 6 pounds of Jerusalem artichokes arrived in the mail this week and we got them right in the ground. They’ve gone into three different spots where they’re out of the way and can be allowed to go wild.
We’ve never had them before so this will be a learning experience.

My awesome neighbor brought me a load of composted cow manure and hay for the garden. After spreading it out and letting it dry completely we hit it with the tiller and worked it into the soil. I think it looks wonderful.

These two stumps are just high enough I can’t quite mow over them. We decided to use one of my fathers alternative methods of removing a stump. As a kid my dad used to dump a bag of charcoal over stumps and place a grill on bricks. Once the fire was right we’d grill over that old stump. It look several fires to burn the stump out but we all enjoyed it.
The girls really enjoyed their fire cooked hotdogs and s’mores. After we were all full I threw several sticks on to help build a good bed of coals.

The apples trees we bought and transplanted a few weeks ago are budding and appear to be doing well. Hopefully the deer leave them alone and they continue to do as they’ve done thus far! Having our own apples in 3 or 4 years would be wonderful.

Several of the Mulberry trees in the back yard have berries on them already. I’ve never done anything with them except allow the chickens to enjoy them once they hit the ground.

We are adding an additional chicken pen next to the existing pen for the Cornish cross chicks we are getting. These chicks will be kept separate from the other chickens so we can keep them on different feed to get them big and fat for butcher.
The wire and gate were all free and the corner posts were on hand. So far our only expense for this project will be hinges and the spring to keep the gate closed!

This year is my first time planting and growing potatoes, and last night I noticed a few of our first potatoes coming up! We have 3 pounds each of 3 different varieties planted.

I finally got around to actually making the chicken tractor mobile. The wheels came off an old air compressor that no longer worked.

I am trying to get myself organized and ready for our next batch of chicks, some Cornish cross, and went to see a neighbor about a brooder he’d mentioned I could borrow. It’s going to need some TLC but this big unit should work well for all of the meat chickens we are getting for ourselves, family and some neighbors. I am soaking the rusted bolts and nuts in lubricating oil now and hope to have it apart and all the wiring exposed by this evening. I’d like to know the history behind this company and to see if I can determine the age of this unit.
