Mulberries are turning red

May 7th, 2012 No comments

They’re turning red and will be purple soon. The chickens will be delighted when they begin dropping to the ground.

Berries on the Mulberry trees

April 16th, 2012 No comments

Several of the Mulberry trees in the back yard have berries on them already. I’ve never done anything with them except allow the chickens to enjoy them once they hit the ground.

We ordered our first fruit trees and berry plants

February 15th, 2012 No comments

Last night we submitted our order to Stark Brothers for some apple trees as well as blackberry, blueberry and strawberry plants.  We all like Gala apples so we got a semi dwarf Gala and a Golden Delicious, which are good compatible pollinators.   We also ordered some thorn-less black berries, blueberries and strawberries to plant out near the garden.

It will be hard to do, but my plan is to clip the strawberries the first year to encourage the plants to grow and get strong to make it through the winter.  Here is the site where we will start putting fruit trees.  If you look you’ll see a section of fence in the photo.   They’ll be planted on this side of the fence.
