Grinding deer burger

May 17th, 2013 No comments

My brother came over with his deer meat from last fall and we finally got around to grinding up the portions we had set aside for burger. With the price of hamburger these days this meat will help to offset our grocery bill.

Our grinder is one of the Cabela’s models and is rated at 1 HP. It does a great job and is much quieter than the old bet driven setup we used for years.

It’s deer season here in MO and time to add some inexpensive meat to the freezer. This mature doe provide our family with several meals.

Shot a coyote trying to get a chicken dinner

October 4th, 2012 No comments

The other day all of our birds were out free ranging in the trees by the house and enjoying bug hunting in the leaf debris. The windows in the house were open so I was able to hear all the birds were alarmed about something. I peeked out the window and spied this female coyote at a distance staring at all the birds as they fled towards the house.

Quickly I grabbed a nearby rifle, a Remington 700 chambered in 17 Remington, pushed open the back door and aimed the rifle while standing inside the house. She knew she had been busted and I could see she had turned to leave and was disappearing into the trees. When I barked like a dog she turned 180 degrees to face me. One quick shot where her neck and chest meet and she dropped in her tracks. She will not be having any more chicken dinners!

Turkey season is quickly approaching!

March 14th, 2010 No comments

Spring turkey season opens here in Missouri in just about 4 weeks.  I’ve got to get out between now and then to dig out my turkey hunting gear and pattern the shotgun.  I’ve decided to buy some brown shipping paper and staple it to an old piece of plywood.  That should make it pretty easy and inexpensive to help me determine which choke and load to use.

Deer finally show up at the trail camera

March 14th, 2010 No comments

I finally had some deer show up at the trail camera and was able to get several good pictures.  To my eye it appears that I have a doe with 4 young ones.  We’ve seen them in the yard a few times now eating the grass which is starting to turn green.

Headed into Kansas City today to look at a Mathews Z7

March 5th, 2010 No comments

Today I am headed into Kansas City, MO, to look at one of the new Mathews Z7 bows.  Now that I am back in Missouri I will be able to hunt a lot more and I am looking forward to doing more bow hunting.  And it is to that end that I am going to make a new bow purchase this year!

Reloaded some lead free ammo for the bear rifle

August 12th, 2009 No comments

Yes, I am going to try and shoot my first bear before we leave California.  I had the choice between my 260 Remington and my 338 Lapua.  Because of the condors in the area I want to hunt I will be forced to use lead free bullets to comply with Fish and Game regulations.  Unfortunately there aren’t many lead free choices for the 260 so I decided onthe 338.  It should have plenty of knock down power for a California black bear.

I’ve not been at the reloading bench for quite some time, so it was nice to have a little quiet time.  It’s unfortunate I have to drive so far here to go and shoot or I would do a lot more reloading!  It will be good to get back to Missouri.

Updated my predator hunting site!

August 12th, 2009 No comments

I  finally got around to getting my predator hunting forum moved over to a new domain name.  It used to be a site dedicated to predator hunting here in California.  Considering I am moving soon I thought I’d move the site to a new domain that was a little broader reaching and not really dedicated to just one State.  Thus Predator Wild was born!  While it is dedicated to predator hunting it also has forums dedicated to equipment, techniques, firearms, reloading and many others.  It also offers a Blog for each of the members and a cool photo gallery.
