Spring cleaning and repair day out in the chicken shed

April 13th, 2013 No comments

Today we did some needed repair work to the chicken roosts and mucked out the straw and pine shavings that has been out there all winter. Lots of shoveling to get everything out. Two 2x2s and a few cuts allowed us to get a few much needed repairs made to the roosts. The chicken house will get some new straw this afternoon.

A small green house and starting seeds

April 4th, 2013 No comments

Today’s project was to put together this little green house from left over scrap lumber and to get some seeds started. Originally I had intended on just setting the old window on top. When I fund a set of mismatched hinges I decided to attach them and make my little handle. I bought a 2×2 to complete this project, the rest of the material was already on hand.

Once it was together it was time to get some seeds started and inside the box. Various heirloom Tomato seeds and some zucchini are started and will hopefully poke through in about one week. If all goes well a tractor with an attached tiller will work over the garden tomorrow.

Repurposing an old metal shed

October 30th, 2012 No comments

We finished disassembling the old metal shed we found on the property in pieces and blown into a ditch. The were brought up to the house and are not attached to the rabbit enclosure. The metal is a little rough and dirty, but it will work as a wind break from that cold north wind. And old downed limb and a little shoveled dirt and this project should be done for the year.

Making an improvement to the lawn cart

July 12th, 2012 No comments

This project is one that I’ve been wanting to accomplish for months. The draw bar on the lawn cart was short enough that attaching it with a hitch pin to the four wheeler was a real pain. For $35 I was able to buy the new 1 7/8″ ball and the matching hitch with the necessary bolts to attach everything.

I had some oak board laying around that I used to attach the hitch to the trailer after drilling holes and cutting it to length.

It’s now so much easier And faster to attach and detach the lawn cart.

Future home for ducks and guineas

May 27th, 2012 No comments

We’ve been busy getting this little enclosure together in our latest pen. It will be a multi use pen and coop that will be used for raising babies, meat chickens and a wintering spot for the ducks once the pond begins to freeze.

We used free roofing remnants from my parents latest project for the roof. It will need to be leveled and the back raised a touch. We were running out of time and called quits for the day at this point.

The barrels you see on the ground to the left of the chicken shed will be our next project; a rain barrel and automatic waterer.
