Setting up a larger mess free chicken waterer

May 9th, 2012 No comments

The chicks are going through about two and a half bottles of water so I decided to move up to something larger. We cleaned up an old gallon jug and added two nipples and a fill hole. This should last much longer than the Gatorade bottle we were previously using.

Chicks learning to use the mess free watering system

May 5th, 2012 No comments

I spent some time laying in the shade next to our chicken tractor and 19 silver laced Wyandotte chicks today trying to encourage them to use their waterer. After tapping the nipple several times and getting drops of water to hang off the end the began to peck at it. Hopefully before long they’ll all be using it and I won’t need to goof with a traditional waterer.

Over two inches of rain last night

March 29th, 2012 No comments

I awoke to find an unexpected surprise in our rain gauge. Unfortunately for me I planted turnip and pea seeds last night in the garden in anticipation of the rain. I wasn’t expecting this much !! I fear I may have a bunch of turnip seeds washed away.

Here is a quick picture of the rain gauge and my daughters boot next to one of the many worms on the surface.
